OFFICIAL CAVALRY ARTILLERY SABER Circa 1855. Author: Vicente Toledo Momparler (sword expert)
Reference | 4-1855-D |
---|---|
Name | Cavalry Artillery Officer |
Period | 1855 |
Guard | Extremely interesting brass guard, with an outstanding Spanish shield applied on the front of the quillons, which, originating from rosettes on the base plate, lead to the center of the ring which, following its curve, reaches the pommel where it is firmly attached to the head of a full knuckle bow, chiseled and topped by a spherical cap. Fluted wooden grip covered with sandpaper leather, wired and fitted into a ferrule. Short quillon decorated with a rosette. |
Blade | Bigoter blade, back rounded on its inner two thirds, reaching a raised secondary edge. On the outside, a continuous cutting edge to the tip. A groove near and parallel to the spine. Often called a scimitar-shaped blade. |
Scabbard | Iron, fitted closely to the blade, giving a sensation of being very flat to the touch. |
Inscription | ARTA FA DE TOLEDO 1855 ARTILLERIA DE A CABALLO |
Description | The blade precisely matches the regulation for the 1855 Cavalry Artillery Brigade, as evidenced by its explicit marking. However, the guard would not originally correspond to the Artillery, so it was probably a fancy choice by an officer. On the other hand, blades of this type are mounted with different Artillery guards. |
