CAVALRY HUSSAR SABER 18TH CENTURY REF 4-1705-A. Author: Vicente Toledo Momparler (sword expert)

Reference 4-1705-A
Name Cavalry Hussar Saber
Period 18th century
Guard made of iron, of the so-called stirrup type or Hungarian style. Features a simple protective ring open at the top, a knuckle bow, a small reinforcement at the vertex of the right angle to form the guide, and a quillon. The thick grip, made of wood, has spaced spiral wrappings of hemp cord, covered with leather and wired with copper thread.
Blade curved, very wide, with a broad central fuller, flat spine on the inside, continuous edge on the exterior and a centered groove close to the spine. False edge on the blade.
Scabbard made of leather, with several iron fittings and two rings on the first and second mounts.
Description The saber is a composition of the first hussar sabers used in Hungary at the end of the 17th century, the French hussar sabers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and the Spanish sabers of the late 18th century.
Historical Context After the War of Succession, King Philip V was the first Bourbon in Spain and modernized the Spanish Army, reorganizing it in the French style. The old Spanish Tercios disappeared and Regiments were incorporated into the army.
Origin of the Arms The sabers they used have never been found, possibly because they must have used imported weapons from France or Hungary and the markings on the blades would correspond to those places, not being recognized as Spanish.
