Guard | Made of iron, fully pierced and chiselled with very beautiful intertwined scrollwork. The pommel is a flattened spheroid with a high button. The pommel is also beautifully pierced, as are the knuckle bow and the escutcheon on the ricasso. Low cup with a point breaker. The hand guard and the straight quillons are adorned with chiselled oak leaf designs, ending in rosettes. |
Blade | Straight and long, with a fuller in the first third where the inscriptions are found on both sides, the rest has three flat surfaces. It has a double edge leading to the tip. |

Description | Splendid cup hilt sword by the renowned Toledo swordsmith Tomás de Ayala. This piece is magnificently preserved and is located in the Valencia Institute of Don Juan in Madrid. The rapier swords are of the cup, like this one, or shell type, with a straight blade. |
