Hilt | Steel, in the Prussian style. Closed pommel with turned guard. Long knuckle bow with two washers in the middle that allow a pin to be placed through the wooden grip and the blade’s tang. Lower rivet. Grip wrapped with abrasive cloth and wire-wrapped in gilt brass with lightly defined ridges. Inner screw for securing a leather finger guard/security. |
Blade | Slightly curved, with a fuller, without false edges, semi-flat spine up to the guard inside and a broad edge outside up to the tip. The guard has a lenticular shape, thus with a true edge and false edge. |
Scabbard | Made of iron, with two braces and corresponding rings. Open throat with screw on the face and a short asymmetrical branch with fins. |

Regulation | The Royal Ordinance of November 8, 1880 states: “The sword for Cavalry Model 1880 is declared standard.” “Reformed Cavalry sword model, called Prussian, i.e., 1860 model… that the sword V.E. proposes as standard and is attached, provided it has approximately the same cost as the model currently in use, it meets the criteria of being lighter, with a steel grip, short false edge, without false edges, without significantly changing the center of gravity, all of which makes the said weapon, being more resistant, have better handling conditions…” |
